Learning goals: The students will be able to define old and new immigrants and list what countries fall into each category. The students will be able to explain why immigrants came to America and what they faced here; the issues and the benefits they encountered.
Bench marks/standards:
How immigration, internal migration and urbanization transformed American life.
Methods: individual, small group and whole group
Activities:
Whole group: discussion on why they think people would have immigrated to America, add these to our American Flag puzzle-5 minutes.
Whole group: power point lecture- 30 minutes.

Turn in your ‘tweets’ at the end of class.
Materials: paper and pen for taking notes, a smart board for notes, the ‘tweet sheets’ and pair slips, flag puzzle for the beginning of class.
Prior Knowledge: An idea of why immigrants would come and where they came from. I will cover this in class, but having some sense will allow them to grasp the idea more readily.
Feedback Strategies: walking around and listening to their ‘tweets’, at the end of class I will collect the ‘tweets’ and make comments on them.
Evaluation Strategies: The ‘tweets’ will be graded more for completion, as long as they wrote down something we learned in today’s lesson and completed the assignment correctly, then they will get a check mark.
Special needs of students: Some may need repeated instructions, but all should be able to finish this lesson without anything in particular.
