Ohio Standards Connection:

History:

Geography

Students use knowledge of geographic locations, patterns and processes to show the interrelationship between the physical environment and human activity, and to explain the interactions that occur in an increasingly interdependent world. Students use knowledge of perspectives, practices and products of cultural, ethnic and social groups to analyze the impact of their commonality and diversity within local, national, regional and global settings.

Math:

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Science:

Physical Earth

Systems can be described and understood by analysis of the interaction of their components. Energy, forces and motion combine to change the physical features of the Earth. The changes of the physical Earth and the species that have lived on Earth

Lesson Summary:

To incorporate math, science and history into the learning of Dinosaurs; covering who first discovered them, what they are now, and human to dinosaur size proportions.

Estimated Duration:

Two weeks ending in a final test (three class periods per topic section ending in a final test on the last day)

Instructional Procedures:

  1. Some lecturing along with class discussions on dinosaurs then, and what the world would be like if they still lived.
  2. Taking a map, place dinosaur stickers on the places that dinosaur fossils have been found.
  3. What fossils can be used for now.  Can you make your own fossil?
  4. Create a chart, using yourself as the standard on the key, and then show the size of at least three dinosaurs compared to yourself.

Differentiated Instructional Support:

Students of all learning abilities will be engaged through; lecture and class discussion, projects and hands on learning.

Post-Assessment:

The last day of the two weeks will end in a final test.  The test will see that the students understand what was taught in the two weeks prior.

Homework Options and Home Connections:

There will also be three projects, showing the students understand each of the standards (make your own fossil, create a map showing the locations of found fossils, create a chart showing the ratio of human size to dinosaur size).

Materials and Resources:

For teachers: an example of the projects, rubric, and power point

For students: the materials for the three projects listed above

Key Vocabulary:

Different Dinosaur names, ratios and proportions, fossils and fossil fuel

Technology Connections:

A prezi; used for the lectures segments of the class, a green screen introduction; introducing the students to the lesson and unit, the ratio proportion can be done on the computer.
